9.15  ShoeboxLA presents Cut Both Ways

ShoeboxLA begins its second season with Los Angeles artist Jay Erker. For Cut Both Ways, Erker presents, in book form, layered fashion advertisements whose subject matter has been clearly removed. Eliminating the subject diverts attention from that which is meant to compel, focusing the viewer’s attention to the figure’s absence, the background of the originating image, and the newly constructed abstracted imagery.

ShoeboxLA gives Los Angeles artists an opportunity to do one-day, site-specific exhibitions outside the traditional gallery setting. This season ShoeboxLA is working in conjunction with The Los Feliz Village Business Improvement District. Los Feliz Triangle Park is just west of the car wash/Machos Tacos and just south of the bank parking lot.

  • Saturday, Sept. 15
  • 4 – 7 p.m.
  • Los Feliz Triangle Park at Hollywood Blvd, Prospect Ave & Vermont Ave, Los Angeles
  • Admission is free

9.24 Cultures in Collision: Islam & Homosexuality

The L.A Gay & Lesbian Center (LAGLC), in partnership with the Goethe-Institute Los Angeles, presents this event as part of the ongoing series of free public discussions, Big Queer Convo. “Cultures in Collision: Islam & Homosexuality” will feature a discussion with Ani Zonneveld (songwriter, producer, activist) and Ipek İpekçioğlu (world-renowned Turkish/German lesbian DJ). They will examine the seldom-discussed discrimination faced by LGBT Muslims, from both a U.S.-based and a worldwide perspective. The presentation will also include a live musical performance by Zonneveld, and İpekçioğlu will DJ during the post-event reception.

Zonneveld is the co-founder and president of Muslims for Progressive Values (MPV), an inclusive community organization rooted in the traditional Qur’anic ideals of human dignity and social justice. She is a straight ally of the LGBT community and works tirelessly for women’s and LGBT rights within the Islamic faith.

As a first-generation Turkish/German lesbian, İpekçioğlu pursued a degree in social work in hopes of changing the constructs of the world in which she fought to survive. As a world-renowned DJ who is both Muslim and a lesbian, she had the ability to travel all over the world and share her ideals in her own unique voice.
