Thoughts on Michael Sam, So Far, Until Tonight

The former SEC defensive player of the year will have one more opportunity to show coach Jeff Fisher that he belongs with the St. Louis Rams. Tonight, the St. Louis Rams play their final preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, 4 p.m. Pacific Time and 7 p.m. Eastern Time. This is his last shot to make the final Rams roster, but not necessarily his chance at staying in the NFL.

Michael Sam was a 7th round draft pick by the Rams, who now have until Saturday at 4 p.m. Eastern Time to trim their roster from 75 players to the NFL mandated 53 players. If Michael Sam makes the team or not, it will purely be a football decision. Unfortunately for Sam, he was drafted into a team that is stockpiled with talented defensive players.

If Sam does not survive the cut, will it mean that Sam wasn’t good enough to play in the NFL? Sam has had an impressive preseason, so far. In 3 preseason games with limited minutes, Sam has recorded 5 tackles and 3 sacks. He has yet to play a full game, and yet, he has taken full advantage of his limited time on the field.

One thing is for sure, Michael Sam has built a case for himself and is going to make coach Fisher’s decision quite difficult to make. Sam is a pass rusher and it’s a position that is highly coveted in the NFL. Personally, I think he has a 50-50 chance of making the St. Louis Rams game day roster.

So far, Sam has proven that not only can he play in the NFL, but that he belongs in the NFL. So, if it’s not meant to be and he does get cut by the St. Louis Rams on Saturday, one of the other 31 teams will snatch him up.
