The fashion world sits like a deer in the headlights as it tries to process the news that Michael Kors will purchase Versace for just over $2 billion, released on Tuesday, September 25. Donatella Versace who has been at the helm of the company since the passing of her brother in 1997, will remain in charge of the brand for the foreseeable future.

Despite being unsanctioned by Donatella Versace, the recent FX series “The Assasination Of Gianni VERSACE — An American Crime Story” has only fueled the cult of Versace. The equally haunting “Gianni, We Love You” fashion show for the Spring/Summer 2018 VERSACE TRIBUTE COLLECTION (inset above) brought back classic Gianni Versace prints and grit-glam reincarnated with modern tailoring, and featured a series of sound bites of provided by Donatella herself that played over the runway show soundtrack. So, did Donatella know back in 2017 that she would sell her late brother’s fashion house? Was this a last goodbye to her brother?

“We are all very excited to join a group led by John Idol (Michael Kors CEO), whom I have always admired as a visionary as well as a strong and passionate leader. We believe that being part of this group is essential to Versace’s long-term success,” Donatella said Tuesday in a statement released by Michael Kors Holdings Limited.

Social media is exhibiting signs of confusion, bewilderment, anger and fear over the future of the Versace they have come to know and love.

“Donatella’s iconic style is at the heart of the design aesthetic of Versace. She will continue to lead the company’s creative vision. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Donatella on Versace’s next chapter of growth,” Idol said in the same statement.
