Just months after the election of François Hollande as the new French President, France’s Prime Minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault, announced that equality for gays and lesbians in marriage and adoption will come in 2013, according to the AFP on July 3.

“In the first half of 2013, the right to marriage and adoption will be open to all couples, without discrimination (translated from French),” Ayrault said in a speech before the French Parliment. Ayrault was heckled during his speech.

Days before the announcement the annual Gay Pride Parade in Paris was symbolically supported by the French Minister for Families Dominique Bertinotti, who attended to see the floats take off at the beginning of the parade route.

Hollande campaigned for president with the promise of gay marriage and it got him elected over incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy.

Perhaps President Obama took the hint from Hollande, but will it work to keep him in office?  Since Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage just after Vice President Biden’s announcement of support of same-sex marriage several other public figures and organizations have followed suit.
