Adding to the hype surrounding the start of its 35th season in just a week, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles (GMCLA) released a video inspired by the popular Kmart Joe Boxer holiday ad, on Dec. 4, 2013.
On Dec. 6, the original ad, “Show Your Joe” reached nearly 16 million views. It features handsome male models wearing black tie outfits up top, but only Joe Boxers on bottom, as they trust their instruments to the sounds of jingling bells and promote their goods available at Kmart.
“Kmart brilliantly captured a fresh holiday spirit that readily appeals to a younger generation of Americans: a little naughty; a little nice,” said GMCLA member and Marketing Consultant, Rich Meyers. “GMCLA’s concert programming embodies that same spirit, so our parody was simply an entertaining way of paying homage to an innovative marketing campaign.”
The “GMCLA With Bells On (Kmart Joe Boxer Parody)” video features chorus singers wearing either Santa-styled boxers complete with white fur trim or fuchsia tutus dancing in Nutcracker-style to jingling bells and promoting the upcoming kick-off show “Holiday Spectacular: Festival of Carols”. The GMCLA video has nearly 40,000 views and hints to the fun that audiences can expect of the holiday show.
This season of the GMCLA celebrates 35 years of effecting change within the LGBT community by promoting LGBT visibility, pride and culture, as well as welcoming Wells Fargo as the Season Sponsor for second year in a row.
GMCLA presents the annual musical extravaganza at the Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale, CA on December 14th and 15th, 2013. For more information, visit www.gmcla.org.
