The ever impressive Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles didn’t disappoint with the latest show of “He Had It Coming” at the Alex Theatre, which featured Tony Award-winning performer and activist Alan Cumming. The adventurous exploration of Broadway spectacles left audiences feeling inspired as much as jovial. Many of the songs inherently, but more so while sung by the all-male chorus struck an emotional and political chord far deeper than just the fantastic voices and flare floating on the stage.
Cumming performed “Mein Herr” (Cabaret), “What More Can I Say?” (Falsettos) and an original song from Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs titled “Last Day On Earth Solo.” However, it was his particular brand of Broadway bite in the rendition of Sondheim’s “Ladies Who Lunch” that really made one question traditional “feminine” roles and whether or not LGBT people want/need or should have to fit themselves into them.
Cumming was especially gracious as he performed with the all-volunteer chorus members. He appeared to be in awe of their contributions and particularly proud of sharing the stage with them.
The other highlights came from “Not My Father’s Son” and “Raise You Up (Kinky Boots), “Better With A Man” (Gentlemen’s Guide To Love And Murder), “Cell Block Tango” (Chicago), “Hello” and “Turn It Off” (The Book Of Mormon), and of course “You’ll Be Back” (Hamilton).
In solidarity with the audience and chorus regarding the current political climate, Alan Cumming said, “We’ve had to fight for our rights before, and we are ready to do it all again!”
Up next, the chorus will return to Walt Disney Concert Hall for “I Rise” on July 8, 2017.
